DIY Arrow Build Setup - Two Tools to Keep on Your Bench

Spoiler: you only need a Modsaw and a fletching jig to get started. 

Arrow building might seem overwhelming and expensive at first, but if you’re curious about diving in, there are really only two tools needed to begin building your own arrows.

To start, you’ll need a quality arrow saw to cut shafts precisely. The Modsaw was built for DIY archers like you to start your arrow-building journey. It is a 3-in-1 solution, meaning that the arrow saw, squaring device, and spin-tester are all built onto the same product. If you choose to use another arrow saw, you’ll need to purchase a squaring device and spin-tester separately, as these are key tools for crafting precise arrows.

Once you’ve cut, squared, and spin-tested your arrows, you’ll need a fletching jig to complete the build. There are a few great options out there. We don’t manufacture one, yet… :)  

Together, these tools should run less than $350. While a Modsaw and fletching jig are the only tools needed to start building your own arrows, there are also supplies you’ll need for each dozen arrows you build.

These include: 

• Arrow shafts
• Inserts and nocks
• Wraps (if preferred)
• Fletching (vanes or feathers)
• Adhesives (epoxy or super glue)

Once you start diving deeper into arrow building and want to increase your knowledge and build consistency, it’s a good idea to invest in a solid spine tester and scale. However, these aren’t necessary to get started, and you can still achieve great arrows before these purchases.

Overall, your first arrow build will cost more than it would to have your local shop build them. However, you’ll gain immeasurable knowledge and confidence by knowing that each component has been meticulously checked and verified to result in a perfectly true arrow.
